I was flipping through the channels last night and I caught a story on Frontline about how the US Government is infringing on our 4th Amendment rights by spying on our phone calls and filtering our information. Yes, Frontline! I know that many of the blogs have been screaming about this for years, but to have this on NBC in a one hour special is a great indicator that the media has finally realized that they have an obligation to our country to keep our government in check.
Basically how the NSA spying program works is that they filter our phone calls for "keywords" that would indicate terrorist activity. So, they assume that every person in the United States is a terrorist and wait for you to just talk about it on the phone so they can bust you. This was one of the reasons for the American Revolution. The British could search anyone without a warrant and our founding fathers felt that this infringed on our rights. That's why this Amendment was in the top 5...VERY IMPORTANT. I guess that the Bush administration would say that our founding fathers were more interested in harboring terrorists than protecting Americans.
So, where does this surveillance stop? Maybe the NSA can use this information bring down political rivals with private "embarrassing" information. Hell, the Bush administration has already fired several US Attorneys because they would not trump up charges on political rivals. What not use the NSA records to do the same thing?
So, the mainstream media may be a little late on doing their job, bur better late than never. |

OK. The Democratic controlled congress and Senate are in full swing after 6 long years of a one party control. Our country is always on top when there is a shared power and we have seen the devistating effects in recent years...Iraq War, acceleration of Global Warming, money funneling to the ultra rich (70% of tax breaks to the top 5%, conversly 6.5% of tax breaks go to the bottom 80% ), etc. A new order is in town and we have seen such drastic changes like focus on rebuilding ... |

I just read in today's headlines that Bush is not going to accept the bi-partisan report on what to do in Iraq. It seems that they forgot to mention anything about securing the oil and ensuring record profits for all of Bush's friends for the coming years. Therefor, Bush is going to come out with his own "plan" next month. Meanwhile, our soldiers continue to die while we wait for this asshole to come up with his own terrible plan. All of his other plans got us t... |

So the big buzz for the last few years is that Hillary will probably run for the Democratic nominee in 2008. When you mention this to people, they either love her or hate her! What's the deal with Hillary? Why is she so polarizing?
I always liked her and thought that she always tried to do what she thought was best for the country. But after her stance in Iraq after everything that has happened....I'm not so sure. So, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 ... |

I was thinking the other day (Yes, I know that it is very dangerous) why the United States is in the decline that it is in. The answer to my question kept coming back top the same thing...GREED! The funny thing is that a little greed is a good thing...it's called capitalism and capitalism is the thing that made the USA the greatest country in the history of the world. Well, that and the Bill of Rights.
But, unchecked greed mixes government with the press a... |

So I was listening to the radio this morning and I heard a sound clip from President Bush encouraging people to go out and vote...which is very admirable. But he said that "voting is a privilege." The last time I checked, voting is a god given right for all Americans.
Getting a driver's license is a privilege...freedom of the press, bearing arms, freedom of speech, and voting is a RIGHT! Hey Bush...The Constitution is put in the Presidential bathroom f... |

So I was watching Real Time with Bill Maher (Yes, Bill we would LOVE you to be the executive Producer for Power to the People) the other night and his final New Rule was tough to swallow. Here is the excerpt:
And finally, New Rule: America must stop bragging that it's the greatest country on earth and start acting like it. Now, I know — I know this is uncomfortable for the faith-over-facts crowd, but the greatness of a country can, to a large degree, be measured. Here are ... |

Global Warming: Here Come the Lawyers
I knew that it was only a matter of time before someone realized that they could sue the power companies over their contribution to global warming. The greedy oil companies (Exxon Mobil) should take a look at what happened to big tobacco when they tried to hide and mis-represent the effects of their product. After 10 years of litigation, tobacco companies ended up paying 300 Billion dollars in health damages. ... |

So I just read the story today that Secretary Rice pledged full support of defending Japan against North Korea in the wake of thier nuclear test. This will deter Japan from starting a nuclear arms race with the rest of the Asian world. Wow! Intellegent foreign policy...how did that happen? I guess after 6 years of mistakes you are bound to get something right eventually. |

With only a month left in the mid-term election cycle, we have not heard anything about the evils of homosexuality and how it is a) ruining our children, b) destroying the planet, c) causing terrorism, d) killing puppies, or e) fill in the blank. I guess that it's hard for the Republicans to demonize a group of people when they are so busy putting out their own fires that they have created such as: Katrina failure, Mark Foley, the mess in Iraq, Iran and North Korea going nuclear ... |

Remember a time when you always heard the phrase "Anyone can be President!"? It seems that you never hear that anymore. Have we all become too cynical or have the two parties beaten the American Dream right out of us?
I think that it is because nobody has figured out a way around the stranglehold that the two parties have over the American Political System...until now. Power to the People takes the two strongest mediums of the 21st Century (Television and In... |
